Lou has worked for LifeNet for 21 years and is currently a Flight Nurse for LifeNet Air in Texarkana.
“I wanted to be a nurse since the age of five. My grandmother and aunt were nurses, and I used to think they looked like angels in their starched white uniforms and hats,” she said. “There are so many different kinds of nurses. When I became educated on flight nursing requirements, I went to EMT school and paramedic school to prepare myself for this kind of nursing.”
Outside of the autonomy and the challenges associated with the career, there are other things Lou also loves about her job.
“I get my job satisfaction in caring for those who are injured or sick. I have a need to be needed, and this job fulfills that,” she said. “It is an honor and a blessing to be allowed into a person’s life in order to ease their suffering from illness or injuries.”
In her spare time, Lou enjoys spending time with her family, her dogs, and friends. She also loves traveling to new places, fishing, and reading.
For others considering a career in EMS, Lou believes education is the key.
“Get an education because it’s the only thing that can’t be taken away from you,” she said. “If you like to help others, becoming a healthcare provider will be a job you will love. Always take time to enjoy life and family so you will be able to have healthy coping mechanisms for the stresses that emergency medicine will put on you.”
