In 2005, Shomeka started her career at LifeNet after learning about a position open working “pony express” (LifeNet’s delivery service between locations). A short time later, she took over a vacancy as the receptionist for our headquarters before being given an opportunity to move into medical billing.
“I didn’t know anything at all about medical billing then, but they were willing to teach me. I like learning new things and taking challenges,” she said.
Her ability to accept new challenges has seen her grow and get involved in many departments at LifeNet. In addition to doing billing verification now, she also orders supplies and uniforms for our Billing Department, is a member of the Texarkana Division’s Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Committee, and often assists with PR events in the community.
“I really enjoy being on the MWR because not only am I more involved in the company, but I also feel like I’m able to give back to our field crews. As someone who works in the billing office, it affords me a way to directly help our paramedics and EMTs,” she said.
For others considering a career in medical billing, Shomeka recommends they go for it.
“It’s a great opportunity because it’s a field where you’ll never have to worry about having a job. Someone is always going to need you,” she said.
When she is not at work, she loves spending time with her children and her grandson, Xzavier Lewis.
“He is my heart,” she said.
